Types of Luxury Vinyl Plank

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring is available in many construction types, including stone polymer composite (SPC), wood polymer composite (WPC), and engineered stone polymer composite (ESPC). LVP flooring is popular in homes and businesses because of its realistic wood look and durability.

Here are some types of LVP flooring:

  • WPC: A type of rigid-core LVP that uses recycled wood pulp and hardened vinyl. WPC flooring is known for being lightweight, softer, and quieter than SPC.

  • SPC: A type of LVP flooring known for its durability.

Other factors that affect LVP material cost include: underlayment, core, wear layer, beveled edges, and visuals.

Thinner LVP (2-4 mm) is less durable and more susceptible to scratches and dents. Thicker planks (6-8 mm) are more durable and stable. A 12 mil wear layer is the standard option and is sufficient for most homes, while a 20 mil wear layer offers commercial-grade protection for areas with heavy foot traffic.

Glued or Floating LVP

The two primary types of Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring are:

1. Glue-down LVP: This type of LVP flooring requires adhesive to be applied to the subfloor before laying down each plank. Glue-down LVP offers a more permanent installation and is typically recommended for commercial spaces or areas with heavy foot traffic.

2. Floating-click LVP: Floating-click LVP features a click-lock mechanism that allows planks to interlock with each other, creating a "floating" floor that is not attached to the subfloor. This type of installation is popular among homeowners due to its ease of installation and versatility, as it can be installed over various subfloor materials without the need for adhesive. Floating-click LVP is also easier to remove and replace, making it a convenient option for DIY enthusiasts or those looking for a temporary flooring solution.
